Roman Medicine

Because doctors are sometimes called “leeches”

Romans didn’t have stethoscopes but….

Roman Medicine

Most of the medicinal knowledge acquired by the Romans was from the Greeks. The Hippocratic Oath was written by Hippocrates, a Greek doctor. The Greek idea of the four humors was also acquired from the Greeks. The Roman doctor Galen adopted many of his ideas.  Doctors didn’t know much about health at the time and frequently killed their patients.  There weren’t very many different kinds of medication, and  not much scientific knowledge was associated with medicine. The Romans made many medical advances that directly affect modern medicine. For example, leeches are still used in some procedures done today such as reattaching fingers.  Hospitals were created by the military throughout the wars of the Roman Empire.
