The Third Punic War |
|
After the Second Punic War Carthage would never again be able to truly resist the might of Rome. While the Romans were occupied by the Macedonians and other nations after the Second Punic War Carthage began to regain some of its old wealth. However Carthage didn’t even come close to regaining even a small measure of its former military power. The Romans were always very suspicious of Carthage because of Hannibal almost conquering them. All the Romans were deeply suspicious of the revival of Carthage. They demanded that the Carthaginians abandon their capital and move to inland Africa. The Carthaginians refused, and the Roman Army attacked Carthage despite Carthage’s best attempts at appeasement. The Romans easily defeated what token resistance the Carthaginians offered, and after six days of street fighting they destroyed Carthage and killed most of the people. The people they didn’t kill they sold into slavery. The Romans salted the ground around Carthage to render it uninhabitable. Carthage never again regained any power. And the empire was totally destroyed. |
