Why Graphic Organizers?

Handouts from TCEA Workshops 2005

Many teachers have been using graphic organizers for years.  This page is devoted to promoting the use of graphic organizers, particularly the software tools, such as Inspiration©, by teachers and students.

Teaching with graphic organizers promotes critical thinking skills, and retention, and makes learning enjoyable.  Graphic organizers help students understand relationships between concepts.  Students are able to create a visual representation of difficult concepts, giving them ownership of the information

Best Uses of Graphic Organizers

Graphic Organizers are most effective when these three principles are followed:

1)The software is placed in the hands of the students

2) Emphasis is placed on finding the relationships between concepts

3) The teacher asks good questions (e.g. analyze, justify, rank, classify, diagnose, reconstruct, etc.
