The Punic Wars were the three wars between Rome and Carthage from 264 BC to 146 BC.  They developed as Rome and Carthage expanded into each other and competed for territory.  While Carthage started out as the dominant sea power of the Mediterranean, Rome usurped the claim and eventually raised Carthage itself.
